Australian four-piece Planet are next on the list of artists down under to channel Britpop influence with an Oceanic twist. Whilst lead singer Matty Took, being a sibling to Johnny (DMA’s), has turned heads, they are very much carving their name by themselves, and will continue to do so during their 13 date tour of the UK throughout the back end of July. Matty Dagger speaks to them ahead of Tramlines Festival on July 19th in association with This Feeling & Scotts before hitting further This Feeling stages at UK festivals, Y-Not with Scotts and Truck with Pirate Studios.
Now that we’re at the very height of festival season, how’s your Summer been so far?
I’ll tell you what, even though we’re coming into the height of winter down here in Australia, the weather has been beautiful. We’re pretty keen to dive into summer festival season, even though your summer is still very much winter to us!
If you could ask for absolutely anything in your festival rider, what would it be?
A hot tub!
What are you currently up to? Anything exciting in the pipeline that you can discuss?
We’ve actually been quite busy back at home. Spending a lot of time in the studio working on our next slew of releases. We’ve actually dropped a brand new single this week called ‘Never New’.
Any upcoming shows that we need to be attending?
We’ll be in the UK until early August on a headline tour:
18 – The Parish | Huddersfield
19 – Tramlines Fest | Sheffield
20 – Broadcast | Glasgow
21 – Underground | Stoke
22 – EBGB’s | Liverpool
23 – The Moon | Cardiff
24 – Joiners | Southampton
26 – Truck Fest | Oxford
27 – YNOT Fest | Derby
28 – The Old Blue Last | London
29 – The Junction | Plymouth
30 – The Boileroom | Guildford
31 – Crawford Arms | Milton Keynes
What film or tv series would your latest release be the soundtrack to?
Something fast-paced, like a remake of Speed or those John Wick movies.
As every artist has an image to go with the music that they make, what would you say are the stylistic links between your music and how you look?
We don’t really take ourselves too seriously. Our music is comfy so we dress comfy.
Are there any fellow artists that you’re looking forward to playing alongside at Tramlines?
Yeah wow, where to begin… Such a great cast of artists. On our stage (The Library Stage) we’re keen to be playing with The Estevans. They joined us for our last UK tour – top blokes with top tunes. Also Shame, The Courteeners & Johnny Marr to name a few. Only wish we could stay for the entirety of the festival and watch them all!
Planet plays the Library Stage at Tramlines Festival on Friday 19th July.
The first UK play of their new single ‘Never Knew’ can be heard on Radio X tomorrow as This Feelings TOTW.
