TAMSYN are a indie rock band featured on BBC Introducing. They made the Soundwaves Music Finalists 2016. The bands music has a lovely combination of catchy guitar and poetic lyrics. The band are made up of…

Alexander Anton – Vocals
Michael Penfold – Rhythm Guitar & Lyrics
Phil Hammill – Lead Guitar
Joel Cheetham – Percussion
Zacharia Taylor-Fray – Bass

We caught up with the band to have a chat and an introduction to the Northern Exposure readers.

Tell me a bit about your band? Who are your major influences?

We’re a captivating new indie rock band from Manchester. We are influenced by our hero’s the Smiths, the Libertines, Oasis and the Cure.

How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Joel and Phil met a few years ago at University and on moving to Manchester they befriended Michael after he and Joel started working at the same bar. They bonded over a mutual love of rock and indie music and started a band. After posting an ad for a singer they met Alex and TAMSYN as we know and love it was formed.

Who writes your songs? And what are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

It’s a fairly collaborate process. Michael usually brings some lyrics and a chord progression and we go from there. We all fiddle and experiment with our various parts and we never really finish a song until we are all happy. We have a great relationship with our friend and producer Andrian Sharples who has helped us massively to progress with our writing, especially when it comes to recording. The main themes are concerned with finding your way in love and life!

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

One of the biggest challenges for any band is standing out from the crowd, especially in Manchester where there is a very competitive scene. Things like designing our own jackets and making well produced music videos have helped but ultimately we worked incredibly hard to make our EP sound as polished as possible so our songs could be played on radio and platforms like Spotify for people to listen to and really pay attention to our music.

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

To form it with friends. That’s what being in a band is all about. There’s plenty of great musicians out there who are technically brilliant but being in a band is about that chemistry and relationship. You’ve all got to have that love and passion for your art and come together as the sum of all the parts to make a greater whole.

Funny band story! Give us a giggle!?

There are a couple that spring to mind! On the set of our Things Change video we originally were going to have a scene with a load of bright balloons in. We had already blown them up before the director decided to ditch the idea so we had to pop them all before we cleared out. Alex found a novel way to do this by using darts from the green room. However he got a little carried away with his ingenious method and accidentally launched a dart into a crowd of startled models and our crew causing them to scatter like a mob of petrified pigeons! Luckily no one was harmed and we managed to carry on with the shoot.

What’s your dream venue/stage/festival!?

Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury!

Do you have any upcoming shows?

Yes we’re playing a new stage below AATMA, which is called “The Peer Hat” on St Patrick’s Day. Paddy’s Day is always a party so anyone in town should definitely come along for what promises to be a right royal knees up!

What does 2017 hold for you? What can we look forward to from you?

We are booked in to record the first half our second EP in April which we are very excited about. We’re teaming up again with our producer from our debut Andrian Sharples and James Mellor will again be sound engineering at the Motor Museum in Liverpool. We will also be releasing our second video for ‘Want You To Care’ in May which is currently in pre production and looking great!
