We do love London girl, Nadia Sheikh, here at Northern Exposure, here’s a girl who despite her gorgeous, delicate voice knows how to rock out. Stamping her mark all over the British music scene, Nadia is definitely one of our ones to watch. Combining indie, rock and pop with folky and jazzy vocals creating a unique sound, she combines quirky melodies and catchy choruses with incredibly insightful lyrics. After a brilliant set at Isle Of Wight festival we caught up with Nadia and asked her to ‘Tell Us Ten’…

Where are you right now and what are you doing?

I am currently on the tube coming back from checking a recording studio out. Making the most of dead tube time by catching up on a few bits!

How did the Isle Of Wight festival go?

We had such a wicked time! Unfortunately we couldn’t make it to the festival for the whole weekend because of work and other commitments the boys and I had, but we had the best time on Sunday. I personally loved The Scruff’s set, they have some tunes! And MINT’s set was brill too. We had to miss The Killers because of ferry times, but I’m 100% sure they would’ve been amazing. And also Travis!

Who’s going to win the World Cup?

That’s a tricky one for me cause I’m half Spanish! But I’d love either England or Spain to win.

Funniest story of the weekend?

I guess it’s not that funny…but we missed our ferry! And we weren’t even rushing, we stopped at Tesco and all! Just got the times wrong and turned up 10min after our ferry left, thinking we were 20min early. Thankfully we had planned well in advance and we had some time on our side.

If you had to cover one song onstage what would it be?

It would have to be ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’. Noel dedicated it to me at a gig in Barcelona when I was 15 and it’s got a little place in my heart. Plus, it’s such a tune, everyone would be singing back!

Best band of the weekend?

We didn’t catch many but I’ll say out of the ones we managed to catch it has to be The Scruff!

Who would headline you down festival on the FRI/SAT/SUN?

Friday, it would be Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Love the new tunes, but have to get some Oasis in the mix. Going back to the question about the cover, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ is up there! Saturday, it would have to be Foo Fighters. I’ve never seen them live, but I saw their set at Glastonbury and ‘oh, my goodness’! Sunday would be a bit of Stereophonics.

One song to blow potential new fans minds?

‘Break Free’. It’s quite ballady but it gets rockier and bigger as it goes. It’s not released yet, so look out for it, it’s one of my faves to play live too.

“A melting pot of unique and folksy balladry, Nadia Sheikh is a genre chameleon with a voice that warms the soul.” – Fred Perry Subculture

Did you spot Peter Crouch at the IOW? If not and you could ask him one question what would it be?

We didn’t! But we’ve heard that he was around the This Feeling tent or Friday or Saturday. I’d ask him if he could be in any band, what band it would be and who in the band.

Whats next?

Our next stop is FIB (Benicassim Festival). We’re playing on Thursday 19th July. Buzzing for that one! Plan-wise, we’ve got some new tunes that we’re taking into the studio, so those will hopefully be out sometime after Summer, and if all goes to plan, we’ll be taking them on the road.
