Nothing beats that indescribable flush of euphoria when you see a band live and you walk away feeling as if you’ve witnessed a spectacle of the highest calibre. The recently refurbished Cafe Totem, known previously as the Rocking Chair, is a jewel in the crown of Sheffield’s live music scene. Avalanche Party have built up a reputation over the years for their explosive live performances, and so to sit them beside two more of the UK’s most exciting up and coming bands at one of the city’s finest venues was always going to be a night to remember.
The extraordinary Cabezudos were first up, with their eclectic and all but hypnotic dosing of blues-rock. Their exceedingly powerful on stage dynamics have you transfixed from the word go. This Liverpudlian quintet have a real flair for diverse and immersive songcraft, complete with raw emotion and spirited, highly charged musical swagger.
This being their first live outing of 2018, the band soared confidently through a set comprised of both old and new music, defined by sparkling tonal facets and oozing a confident and vibrant energy throughout.
Manuka Hive… where do I begin? One thing’s for certain, they are a band with a stellar presence: emphatic vocals atop vehement instrumentation ensures that once seen, they will undoubtedly prove impossible to forget.
It’s somewhat difficult to believe that this is only their second gig: their vivid and alluringly hazy sound and image creates an aura of wonderment and evokes curiousity throughout. They are all but hypnotic to watch, and undoubtedly have a bright future ahead of them.
Avalanche Party are a real tour de force, of which few could even come close to surpassing. I don’t think I’ve come across a single person bear witness to their gargantuan live show and come away disappointed. To describe them and adequately do them justice is a surprisingly difficult task: quite simply, they have to be seen to be believed.
Frontman Jordan emits intensity and might, often vacating the stage entirely to weave through the audience on numerous occasions throughout their set. The performance is a breakneck display of absolute power, energy and magnitude, packed full of thrilling instrumental finery and staggering, powerful vivacity.
They’re the kind of band who you could watch every single night and still be surprised and delighted in equal measure each time.
We may be but two mere months into 2018, but I’m already quite certain that this show will go down as one of the defining musical highlights of the year.
