So, some time ago at a This Feeling TV show recording Bang Bang Romeo met Example and the rest, as they say, is history. Love Yourself was born from that friendship and it is quite simply a stunning piece of work.
A slight departure for both acts and yet still unmistakably BBR, still unmistakably Example. It’s more stripped back than the powerhouses for which Bang Bang Romeo are becoming famous, the lyrics come to the fore and given the message behind the song that would appear to have been the aim. It’s a simple plea to love yourself (obviously) as much as you care for those around you. So many of us are guilty of that.
“For whatever reason, the unconditional love we show to others we rarely show ourselves. If I could give my fiancée one gift it would be for her to see herself through my eyes. She’d never not love herself again. We all know someone who forgets to love themselves – this track is the reminder. It was brilliant working with Example on this track. Funny as f***, genuine geezer, and inspiringly talented”.
– Stars, Bang Bang Romeo
The story goes that the band were in the studio with Example telling him their ideas for the song whilst Mr Gleave seemed to be ignoring them, just sat typing on his phone. Five minutes later he showed them the lyrics he’d typed asking if that’s what they had in mind. That is talent!
“Love Yourself is one of my favourite songs of my career to date that I’ve been involved with. The message is so strong. Every one of us in the studio that day knew someone who had so much love to give others but had forgotten to love the most important person – themselves. The video came together just as easily as the song. Both are absolutely beautifully crafted pieces of art, art that came easily but also with an important message” – EXAMPLE
The juxtapositions of voices and genres just work. Magnificently. The song opens with an almost operatic Stars before we get the hook for the first time, just Ross Cameron casually picking his guitar. Example joins us and the track lifts with an almost 80s Pride Disco feel. From here it just builds and builds. It’s a driving force. That hook flying through the track, constantly working its way between your ears and taking up residence. You will be singing it, well, forever.
The finale just brings the whole song together. Crashing, pounding, relentless. Stars and Examples voices perfectly intertwined, Richard Gartland’s drums hammering the message home. It is truly epic. You’ll immediately hit repeat. I guarantee that.
