Influences: The Smiths, Oasis, The Beatles, Manchester Scene

Moonsugar are based in Birmingham and are releasing their new Single ‘I Wanna Feel’ on  February 14th. We caught up with Adee to tell us about the band and what 2017 holds.

Firstly how are all you all? We want to know all about Moonsugar! Tell me how did you all meet, where you are from and at what point did you decide to start making music together?

Helloooo!! We’re good thanks! Just shaking off the Christmas hangovers! We’re all from Birmingham or around it and it all started with me (Adee) Jon (guitar) and Dave (keys) I knew Jon through his cousin, and Jon worked with Dave. We started jamming and it sounded shit!! So we decided to get a bassist and a drummer, again, Jon knew Maiden on bass and I knew Ellis the drummer from school so it all happened quite nicely! Jon had a couple of tunes written already that we jammed and it started to come together. We’ve only been going ‘properly’ for about a year so we can’t complain!

Who writes your music and what helps get the creative juices flowing?

The main writers are Dave and Jon. They start with a basic idea and then Ellis and Maiden add the groove. Lyrics come from all over I’ll write them or we’ll write them together. Sometimes Jon or Dave will just come in and have a song basically done, we’re not the sort of band who are like. Right, today we’re gonna sit down and write a few songs, they sort of just happen. All being together in the same room playing music is the most important I think, sometimes it’s total shite, sometimes it’s mint! You can have one idea and it turns into something completely different when there’s the rest of the lads there. That’s what it’s all about for me.

Who has influenced and shaped you as a band? Is there a defining person or band that stands out?

We’re big Oasis fans, The Smiths too, we all love but there are loads we draw inspiration from to be fair. That whole Manchester scene I suppose. A time of great clothes and great tunes, it’s not like that anymore!! Obviously, we love the greats too and The Beatles are another we take influence from but who doesn’t! We try not to be ‘like’ anyone but I suppose music has been made now in a way and everything these days is like something else that’s come before! I’d rather someone compare us to an Oasis or a Smiths than fuckin’ Bastille or summat!

If you could tour with absolutely any artist or band who would it be and why?

Fuckin hell it’s a tough one that… For musical reasons I’d like to tour with Marr, just to watch the fucker play every night and sitting and chatting to him would be fuckin’ cool man. He seems to have the world on lock and knows what the fuck is going on, cos I certainly don’t! For reasons of the session and the afterparty’s I’d liked to have toured with Guns n Roses or Sabbath in the 70’s or one of those crazy bands. Proper getting stuck in every night would be great. There’s too many fuckin’ save the world bands these days who juice in the morning and go on Spa days and all that carry on, get the jack out and turn it up man that’s what I say! Hahaha!

What are your thoughts on the current music industry?

I don’t really know what the fuck to make of it, to be honest!! I mean you have the obvious boat load of dross that the likes of Radio 1 and Capital pump out all day just turning the masses into fucking vegetables. Ariana Grande and Drake and all that mob. It’s fucking sickening and not even about actual music, it’s about selling fucking lunchboxes and getting little girls to part with all their pocket money cos when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, the actual performing your fucking tunes part, most of them fall down and rely on backing tracks and fucking stage shows and then have the front to charge 90 quid for tickets!! It’s fucking barmy!! and it’s sneaking into the guitar scene too! Fucking Bring Me the Horizon using a backing vocal cos their frontman can’t sing the fucking tune! The masses don’t care cos fuckin’ Huw Stephens gaffer has told him to say they’re the bollocks and that’s that. People don’t want to think for themselves anymore out of straight fear of not being accepted into society. I could go on all day. From our point of view I’m not experienced enough to comment on the band scene or whatever, what I have worked out is it’s very cliquey and you have to kiss a lot of ass to get to where you’re seen to have to be (wherever the fuck that is) and another thing is a few bands that have been ‘signed’ or have the big management firms behind them aren’t all that compared to other bands on the circuit. Music is subjective at the end of the day and if people wanna buy into shit that’s up to them. We will just carry on writing and recording and playing live until someone see’s sense. It will happen I think if you keep it real and the songs mean something then eventually you will get your rewards for all your hard work!!

If you could bring one artist back from 2016 who would it be and why?

I love Bowie but for me, it would be Prince. I’ll never forget the 1st time I heard Purple Rain as a snotty nosed little twat of 9, I found a load of my mom’s old vinyl and that’s the 1st one that stood out to me, I think it was the motorbike on the cover… and it just blew my fucking mind!!! Then getting a little older and reading about his recording methods and the whole Paisley Park complex and what happened there and actually how fucking sick this guy was at music is just knocked my socks off. He was the best living guitarist until he passed hands down and the guy had a mystery about him, and even now there’s like 20 albums in his vault no one has ever heard. Bowie had the same mystery, these days it’s all fucking Instagram and Snapchat.. you can’t go for a shit without telling the world!! These guys let the music and the art do the talking first and the likes of him are a 1 off.

What is your favourite song to perform?

I’ve got a few but if I had to pick one it would be our new one ‘I Wanna Feel’ it’s just fucking epic, we’ve only played it live twice but the reaction was mega so I’ll go with that 🙂

What are your top 3 tracks of all time?

It changes daily but today I will say;

Prince – Purple Rain

Oasis – Champagne Supernova

The Smiths – What Difference Does It Make?

Finally, what can we expect from you in 2017 and beyond? What are your plans?

We’ve got 3 singles lined up that should all be out by the spring, one or 2 with videos to go with them! Gigwise we’re supporting Jersey Budd in Birmingham on the 1st night of his tour in February and then on to Fleecetonbury in April to see how we fare with some other top quality bands, we can’t wait for that one. Then obviously comes festival season, we will be appearing at a few local ones in and around Brum and are still waiting to hear back off others! Plans after that are to just keep climbing the ladder until we’re all multi-platinum millionaires with fuckin yachts and planes and all that carry on!! We wanna be the best!!
