BLUE RIVER are an energetic and punchy 4-piece indie surf-punk band from Cornwall. Blue River are regular festival-goers playing stages at Boardmasters, Leopallooza, Tunes In The Dunes and The Little Orchard, playing the main stages at the latter two. They are also regulars on the London indie scene playing venues such as The Fiddler’s Elbow, The Spice of Life, Dublin Castle and The Monarch, including a headline show on their most recent appearance.

2019 saw the release of single, ‘LUCY’ , which quickly picked up radio support from the likes of Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 Music show describing it as “energetic, upbeat, lo-fi fun” and an “absolute belter”, as well as scoring plays from John Kennedy on Radio X and Amazing Radio (Listen here: https://youtu.be/MEHcwpC_q-0).
“This is HUGE”Sarah Gosling, BBC Introducing Cornwall & Devon
September sees the release of follow up, ‘SUGAR WHITE SAND’, which has already picked up a play by Huw Stephen’s Radio 1 BBC Introducing show stating:
“It’s powerful stuff, you can’t help but drum to that” – Janice Long – BBC Radio Wales
We caught up with the band to find out a little bit more about Blue River…

I’m Perran, I’m the singer and rhythm guitarist, Marc plays lead guitar and vocals, Adam plays the sexy bass, and Brett bangs the drums.

This line up formed a matter of weeks ago, Brett and Adam are newbies to the world of Blue River.

What style of music would you describe yourself as and what influences do you draw upon?

Well, indie would be our description, but we’ve been dubbed “indie surf punk” of late, it’s stuck now, to be honest. We wear our influences on our sleeves, you’ll hear Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Kinks, The Beatles all in one fucking guitar chord, we don’t hide it, we celebrate good music!

What are you currently up to at the moment music-wise?

Just released a single called Sugar White Sand, it’s been played and dubbed “powerful stuff” by Radio 1s Huw Stephens, we also recently got the single in our local HMV, we did a signing a few days ago, we were overwhelmed by the love and support we received, it’s been mega!

Next up is our 3rd single of this year and it’s called “Lie Next To Me” BBC Introducing have just picked it up, calling it our song that will “thrive us to that Cornish Indie Thrown” so we are buzzing to see out the year with that tune and then play a mega “This Feeling” date at the Water Rats on Dec 6th.

And outside of music, how’s life in general?

It’s beautiful when the sun shines we shine, Cornwall has a way of lifting you up when life gets a bit heavy! Nothing beats the sea air to clear your melon.

What’s the happiest lyric you’ve ever written?

Perran – I have two…

“You say, one day, that’ll find my way, but I, would rather be lost with you”

And of course…

“I found my love down Watergate Bay”

And the saddest…?

“I’ll see you next Tuesday, it’s what you are and it’s how you’ll stay”

Would you rather live in a Yellow Submarine or an Octopus’s Garden and why?

This is the hardest question we’ve ever been asked….. fucking hell, we would have to say Yellow Submarine, just listen to the words, WE ALL LIVE IN THE YELLOW SUBMARINE, now I guess Ringo means him, John, Paul and George all live in the submarine right? Tell me you wouldn’t want to be in there with them? Imagine that, off your NUT on acid looking at the psychedelic fishes passing your window so yeah, The Yellow Submarine!

What’s the best venue you’ve played so far and what’s would be your dream venue?

Camden Monarch has seen some pretty lively gigs, rather enjoyed them! Dream Venue… Wembley Stadium obvs.

If you could support any band, past or present who would it be and why?

Oasis, something about the boys being on stage together, nothing brings the people together more when you have thousands of thousands of geezers singing ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ in perfect sync whilst holding a beer in one hand and a bottle of piss in the other, bloody dreamy don’t you think?

What’s the best thing about being in a band?

Never taking anyone in the band seriously, no matter what you do, we will take the piss. Just ask Marc about his cat!

And the hardest…?

Never being taken seriously.

Sum your band up in three words?

Rock N Roll.

What tune should readers listen to right now that sums you up the best?

Sugar White Sand
