DUNTS

After emerging as the best newcomer for the 2018 Scottish Alternative Music awards and the release of their EP ‘Self-proclaimed council punk’  playing shows in London, Hamburg all the way to SXSW, Austin and not to mention the abundance of sold out home town gigs in-between, there is no denying what a highly successful 12 months it has been for Glasgow’s very own punk sweethearts The Dunts.

We were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with them after their appearance on the King Tuts Stage at this year’s TRNSMT Festival.

Hello boys, how are we all?

RAB: HI LORA! HI SINEAD! NICE TO SEE YOU BOTH!

COLIN: This is getting to the silly billy time man.

Let’s be honest here, what Dunt is joining the 27 club, cause you lot are absolutely wild!?

COLIN: Well that’s definitely me…

RAB: Aye, that’s definitely Colin.

COLIN: I’ve already cursed myself… *Colin points to tattoo on his arm showing the number 27*

LORA: RIP COLIN!

RAB: Actually, can change my answer, I think it will be Kyle… *Kyle nods in agreement*

So, your last single, ‘Bad Decisions’ was out a couple of months ago, what’s next for you?

*Long pause from all*

COLIN: What you saw there was a moment of deep reflection,  what is next for The Dunts? Well, we have been back in the studio recording, some new tracks coming and maybe a wee surprise got a few festivals coming. New tunes, new tour, end of October you can catch us 23rd/24th/25th – We will be playing, Edinburgh, The Caves. Dundee Church again and Aberdeen, The Tunnels, then we will be back in Glesga for The Garage in December.

DIV: You’re a big grass mate, A BIG GRASS. That was our secret.

*The Dunts announced a headline Scottish tour Monday, tickets go on-sale tomorrow here: thedunts.co.uk *

DUNTS4

Bet you get asked this a lot but what’s been your biggest Dunt ?

*Sarcastic laughing from all the band*

COLIN: I would have to say one of the biggest Dunt’s was definitely Camden a few weeks ago.

RAB: I am trying to think of an answer without exposing myself.

KYLE: I have to agree with Colin, the weekend in Camden. Especially when you went missing… *point to Sinead*

COLIN: Aye Camden, a wee priory away day for aw the boys, was too hot though, my feet had blisters for 3 weeks after that weekend, had to go buy a pair of trainers during the day cause my new docs were blistering me.

LORA: That’s no very rock n roll.

DUNTS1

DIV: Personally, I like to do this thing where I lie down in my bed for ages then get up really fast and I find that gives me a good a dunt.

COLIN: Aye, spinning in circles dead fast as well and turning the lights on and off.

RAB: We went on tour once; well it wasn’t a tour we just went away to play a gig somewhere else and I was filling the car with petrol and managed to stop it on £45.00 exactly and everyone was cheering.

DIV: Aw aye, everyone was like, ‘hawd it, hawd it Rab’

COLIN: No previous experience either, he just done it.

LORA: That’s incredible!

Next question and my favourite, any shocking band names before you settled on The Dunts?

ALL: SKAG BOYS, SKAG BOYS! SKAGBOYYYYS!!

COLIN: This is a bit of a bleak drug reference, we thought let’s get something that’s very subtle, SKAGBOYS?? That implies we are all taking heroin, none of us have taken heroin in our lives so we thought let’s try and dial it back a wee bit, so here we are. The Dunts, Rab just said it one day and we thought aye that’s it.

Now we need to talk about the thing on everyone’s minds today, especially mine. That cover of OutKast’s ‘Hey Ya’? Where did that come from?

COLIN: That was me, that was ALL ME, ALL FUCKING ME, kidding on. David said we should do a cover, so we all sat down and blasted out as many early 2000’s bangers as we could.

DIV: ‘Livin La Vida Loca’, Naw, ‘Stacey’s Mom’, naw there was too many good songs in there.

COLIN: ‘Cotton Eye Joe’! Naw that wasn’t a real suggestion but I wish it was.

DIV: It’s all about getting something recognisable, some of these pop covers can be a wee bit slow.

LORA: Everyone went wild for it, but we were all waiting for the talking part to see if Rab was going to take it with a Glasgow accent or swing an American accent in there.

COLIN: Nah, he done class, I mean the first time we tried it in the studio he just hit out with *in the voice of Andre 3000* ‘alright, alright, alright, alright, alright’ and we were like *Colin wide eyed* awrite then.

RAB: Aw thanks guys, make sure you stay tuned on the tour for a cover of, ‘Sorry Ms. Jackson’

DIV, KYLE, COLIN: Noo, no this is total shite. Do not believe this! Its on record now, you must deliver.

COLIN: This can not be achieved.

RAB: For the record, we have just been asked to be quiet as we are having too much fun and interrupting other interviews.

DIV: We are now getting daggers. Sorry for us.

WATCH THE DUNTS AT TRNSMT HERE…

Will you guys be hanging around to see anyone else this weekend, any recommendations?

ALL: Crystal, CRYSTAL on the Queen Tuts stage.

COLIN: Excited to see Skat man in the priory after, canny wait to see Skat man he’s the best guy in the world.

ALL: Agreed!

Anyone else playing this weekend you’re excited to see?

COLIN: No just Skat Man, he is the Glasgow music scene. We love you!!

KYLE: Nah he is, he is!

COLIN: Few drams and a couple of snout after this, Skat.

RAB: He is the pillar in which the music scene has been built. We used to watch his videos before he shot us and think! We want that guy to record us. Now we are YN YN with him.

What about ‘TUNE’ then, the new show on BBC Scotland you featured on this week?

RAB: Aye, TUNE. That was class haha!

COLIN: Aye we were nervous but it turned out class, showing off the Priory and the Glasgow music scene for what it is.

KYLE: *Laughing*

Any up and coming Glasgow bands we should be keeping an eye out for?

ALL: THE ROLY MO, ROLY MO! THE ROLY MO!!! So, The Roly Mo?

COLIN: Aye, some boys. Aw I just love them, it getting to that time of the day where I just love everyone. Anyway, listen to the Roly Mo.

The band embark on their headline tour on the 23rd of October starting at The Caves, Edinburgh.
