We speak with Lee and Nick Meldrum, whose ‘vocal melodies and buzzsaw riffs could wake the dead’. They make up SONS and are the Brighton based brothers who burst on to the garage punk scene in January 2016 and have been forcing the music world to sit up and take notice ever since. They’ve recently been signed to emerging punk label Till Death Us Do Party.

Their previous three singles have been heavily promoted by indie/rock luminaries Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Alex Baker and Tom Robinson and have had two live radio sessions under their belts, one with each of champions of emerging artists: Radio X and BBC Introducing.

SONS are well known for their raucous live sets and have travelled up and down the country gigging and playing sets at festivals such as The Great Escape, Camden Rocks and Reading Festival 2017.

I spoke to Nick to find a little more out about this dynamic duo…

Tell me a bit about your band & why should we check you out?

Hi Kate! We’re SONS, two brothers from the sunny south coast making noise to hurt your ears but fill your heart with joy – haha.

Who are your major influences and why?

For me my main influences are Nirvana and The Deftones, I love how the two of them can make brash heavy music but can still have so much melody and beauty to it.

If you had to sum the band up in five words what would they be?

Punky, melodic, truthful, catchy noise.

Who writes your songs?

It’s a double effort mostly with the two of us structuring the music and Lee writing the lyrics.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

I’d say at the moment it’s political. Music is a great platform to voice opinions about what you see as unjust in the world and I think if you have that platform you should make your voice heard.

Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?

That’s a hard one, there are so many I’m loving at the moment but since seeing and playing with them, Avalanche Party pip it for me but Paves, Sisteray, Thieves By The Code and our new buds SKIN are a few of many that I love too.

What’s in your car CD player right now or last song played on Spotify?

It’s always either In Utero by Nirvana or White Pony by The Deftones.

Describe to me your live performance …

Two brothers making more melodic noise than you would have expected a two piece to be capable of making. Think Mike Tyson, if he floated like a butterfly but stung like a hornet haha.

On that note do you have any upcoming shows?

You’re stranded on a desert island like Vince Noir and Howard Moon in The Nightmare of Milky Joe and have one album to get you through, what is it?

Damn I need two, In Utero and White Pony. I can’t live without either of them.

What’s on the horizon, what can we look forward to from you?

Well … Zealot which is our current single, out now through Till Deaf Do Us Party Records is available on all digital platforms.

Our next single Rise will be out December 1st.
