Carvella is a exceptionally tight, four piece band, based in Leeds. Tom Pritchard sings vocals and also plays the guitar, Danny Hughes plays the lead guitar and vocals, George Thomas plays the drums and Nick Sheldon plays the bass guitar. The boys have been making quite a name for themselves over the past year performing at several major festivals and a sell out gig with This Feeling in Birmingham. Without a doubt, the boys are well on the way to full blown nationwide success. We spoke to the guys about playing The Isle of Wight and performing this weekend at Leeds festival.
Hey guys, thanks for chatting with Northern Exposure, can we start by telling me a little bit about how you got together?
Basically met in Leeds playing football together, me and Danny were playing and met George needed a bass player found young Nicolas me and nick learnt the bass and that’s how we started really. That was about 3 years ago.
Who would you say Carvella are influenced by? Who are your favourite bands?
So many different things I listen to everything really. Tame Impala, Foals, Muse, Chilli Peppers, Artic Monkeys, all the big stadium hitters. Alex Turners the man.
Who writes? Is there a running theme to your lyrics?
Danny brings the skeleton of it and we all flesh it up. Lyrics are what we relate to and what you go through. Life.
What are your thoughts on the current music scene?
Think it’s really difficult starting out, but I think once your there and you’ve made your name there is paths to be taken for everyone. As you’ve seen back stage, few beers together. We’re all the same people all trying to do the same stuff, making the same sacrifices, and trying to achieve the same things. There’s a good unsigned scene. Healthy competition, if you hear someone really great it gives you the incentive to step your game up.
What have you got coming up this year?
Next week we’re going to The Isle of Wight Festival and then after that we’re going to be announcing a tour all over the country. We’re also releasing a song, got a lot of studio time coming up. That’s where our ambitions lie in the studio. We’re doing a lot of work on the song we’re releasing. We’re also playing the Jack Rocks stage at Leeds Festival this weekend.
What’s Carvellas dreams?
Just be doing it, tour properly, play every day. Glastonbury main slot would be alright! Big American tour would be great. Japan would be great they love it over there. We want to go as far as we possibly can.
Any advice for new bands just starting out?
Find your path, its hard at first no one’s going to come apart your family and friends but you’ve got to keep at it. Practice, practice and practice! Don’t be ignorant to any music, I think that’s really important listen to everything you possibly can. I heard you mention earlier that you’d changed the sound around, We started out two chords, smashing guitars out but now we’ve got backing tracks. None of us were into The Foals say four years ago until we saw them do a live set at Reading went to watch them together and from then on we all love them. They got a lot of inspiration from house music. Our live sets we now take inspiration from bands like Bring Me The Horizon, you wouldn’t necessarily associate them with our types of bands but you watch their live shows and it’s literally ten out of ten. We’ve started embracing the technical side of what we can do, things like a backing track can really revolutionize your sound. Thats a bit of good advice don’t ignore the technical side of things. embrace that as much as you can. That can only improve your sound.
Highlights of the year for Carvella?
Playing IOW festival this summer. We also loved playing Live at Leeds festival back in May as well as a special gig in Birmingham we did for This Feeling. We sold the whole place out and it was a crazy night!
Why should people come and watch Carvella on the Jacks Rocks Stage at Leeds this weekend?
Great live show. A big sound. Big songs with even bigger chorus’s and a on stage connection that’s hard to find. We’re on at 5pm Friday.
Your stranded on an island…. alone with a record player and one vinyl… Who is it and why?
For me it would have to be Richard Ashcroft Alone With Everybody. Just for the irony of the song “On A Beach”
