Tell us about yourself…
We’re The Winachi Tribe, formed in January 2015 while supporting Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey in London. We were previously called ‘China White’ but changed our name because of the Heroin association with the name. In America ‘China White’ is a street name for Smack and with our management being based in L.A we thought it was the right time for a change, hence ‘The Winachi Tribe’ was born. ‘The Winachi’ is actually an anagram of ‘China White’. Also we were getting our shit together as ‘C.W’ now as Winachi we’re the dog’s knackers.
Who are your major influences and inspirations, and why?
We’re influenced by life…the lives that we live. The people around us, family, friends, enemies, the government, drugs, love, sex, our mental health…Tommy Cooper. Musically artists like Massive Attack, Tricky, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Melle Mel, Primal Scream, and Happy Mondays all played a part in influencing us when we starting off.
Who writes your songs & what are the main themes or topics for your tunes?
Me (Liam Croker) and Antony Egerton write the songs. Other members of ‘The Tribe’ contribute also with their individual parts that they write. The topics vary depending on the mood we’re in, what was on the news in the morning, what we had for breakfast, what clothes we’re wearing…anything and everything. The world’s a pretty fucked up place at the moment, very violent, so that’s been the topic in the most recent track we’re working on.
Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?
A rapper from Warrington called Kyle Hignett aka Cherry K. The kid’s special, outstanding even. He’s working with our old producer/ mentor Latch at Tuff Gong Studios in Warrington, and I’m telling you when he drops his album it’s gonna scare the shirt out of people…in a good way, he’s something else this lad. Real twisted sense of humour in his songs too, so you’ll be laughing but thinking ‘Did he just say that?’ at the same time… good shit.
What’s in your CD player right now?
Syd Barrett/WAR/Curtis Mayfield… I’m also liking Liam Gallagher’s solo singles. Good to hear his voice again.
What are you like live?
An intense, funk driven, powerhouse groove machine. We’re out there by ourselves live. If you know…you know.
Any shows on the horizon?
We do but we haven’t announced them yet. We’ve just finished a 15 date Summer tour.
You’re stranded on a desert island and have one album with you, what is it?
Sly & The Family Stone, ‘There’s A Riot Goin’ On’.
What can we look forward to from you?
We have two remix’s from legendary producers coming out. We’ve just released as a free download of ‘Get Your Boots On Skinny’ (Danny Saber Mix) from our lost ‘Hollywood Hills’ sessions. 16th October will see the release of ‘A Room With A Zoo’ (Howie B Mix), our first release through ‘AWAL’ distribution. We head back into the studio with Jim Spencer 25th September to finish our album which we’ll be aiming to get out early 2018. Also we’ll be announcing shows.
