This dynamic hard rock four-piece outfit based in Sheffield, Steal The City, started back in 2014. They are Sam Bantock on vocals and bass, Tom ‘Smit’ Smith and Joe Hanson on guitars and Ellis Bullement on drums. Musically, the guys describe themselves as combining ‘modern metal music with … harmonious, progressive writing.’ and are well known for their sharp hooked riffs and chorus lines.
Steal The City are not afraid to confront the listener with political commentary on modern times with lyrics such as:
“Is this the future that you fail to see?
Or is the empire that you stand with crumbling at your feet?
The holes in your stories are laid out before me – you can’t silence us any more.”
Playing festivals such as Laycocks, Mapfest, Wombfest and Tramlines and almost constantly touring the North of England has seen the band command a loyal following over the last few years.
Steal The City are set to release their debut EP on April 13th to a sold out Corporation in Sheffield, with a number of other shows announced throughout the UK in the coming months. Their first single from that EP, ‘So, The Thing Is …’ is out now.
Tell us about yourself…
Hello! My name is Joe and I’m the nutcase in Steal The City. I also play guitar for them haha
Who are your major influences and inspirations, and why?
Growing up, bands like Three Days Grace, Bullet For My Valentine and Rise Against made me want to pick up a guitar. Seeing bands perform at Download Festival made myself and our singer Sam want to start a band. We wanted to do what they were doing on stage! Making music and having fun together is now our favourite hobby as a band.
Sum up the band in five words…
Humble, Energetic, Loud, Passionate and very, very Northern.
Who writes your songs?
We all pitch in writing songs. The best thing about us is that we can all bring something to the table, and then we complete the whole thing together as a band.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
Personal experiences and feelings. It’s so much better to write about stuff that has happened to you because you can put the emotion you feel into your songs.
Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?
Fragile Things! A great set of lads with a beasty sound! These guys are going places.
What’s in your CD player right now, or last song you streamed?
Resolution by Lamb Of God. I’m a huge metal head. Angry music is my stress relief haha
What are you like live?
We are loud! We thrive on putting on an energetic and engaging stage show. Lots of movement and getting the crowd involved as much as possible! Did I mention that we are loud?
Do you have any upcoming shows?
Yes! We have our EP launch at Corporation on Friday the 13th of April, and it’s already sold out! We are also playing this year’s Beanfest (July 14th) and headlining the Beg Borrow and Steal on the Tramlines Festival Weekend (21st July)
You’re stranded on a desert island and have one album with you, what is it?
The Poison by Bullet For My Valentine. I could never get bored of that album. It was my childhood!
What’s on the horizon, and what can we look forward to from you?
More and more shows! We are always wanting to play new cities and venues.
