I caught up with Carl Morris as part of our 60 Second feature…

Please introduce yourselves to our readers, who you are and how you formed?

Hi there! I’m Carl Morris, a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Manchester! I’ve been playing gigs in and around Manchester since 2000! After years of open mics/unsigned nights and the odd paid gig now and then I decided to do this full time playing covers as well as my own material all over the U.K & overseas but mainly in the North West.

What style of music would you describe yourself as and what influences do you draw upon?

My tunes vary from different styles probably due to the stuff I listen to, so some could be classed as Blues, Folk, 60’s pop or 90’s Britpop & Indie! My main influences are Oasis, Paul Weller & The Beatles as they were my first loves but obviously they go way beyond these to all kinds of music throughout the decades!

How have things been for you over the lockdown/tier fiasco? What has been the most challenging?

Complete nightmare yeah! The second lockdown has been worse mentally for me to try and keep focused and just be ready for when things open up again. During the first one I was learning loads of new covers, writing new tunes and doing a livestream once a week which kept me sharp! But since summer when I’d started to work again and do around 10 gigs to have that stopped again has been tougher. However more recently I’ve wrote a new tune and started learning new covers and feel positive again, lets just hope it all ends soon!! Obviously the money situation isn’t great as its my only source of income but there’s people a lot worse off than me so as long as its back on soon I’m praying I can still do this full time!

What are your feelings about the current situation and its impact on live music and venues?

It’s absolutely heart breaking to see all the live music venues/nightclubs closed throughout the whole thing and the pubs not knowing what’s happening from one day to the next! There just seems no end in sight for it right now and especially the big gigs and festivals! Scary times and I just pray they’ll all survive! We all need live music in our lives!

Do you think there has been enough help for the industry throughout the crisis?

There’s been plenty of charities set up and help from the MU and others plus the grants handed out to certain venues but nowhere near enough help from the Gov at all! It’s always the Arts that suffer in times like this like they don’t matter, especially grassroots venues and live music!

2020 has been understandably riddled with a lot of negativity, what was some positives for you in 2020?

I got play my first gig after lockdown 1 at the Modwear Festival in Palermo, Sicily which felt amazing!! I’ve written a new tune which is one of my faves ever!! I also started to teach myself keyboard/piano and have used that to write as well which has been refreshing! Seeing the support for ‘our thing’ from others to keep going! I had some lovely messages from people watching my livestreams saying it kept them going and sane during lockdown which means the world knowing your helping others as well as yourself playing music!!

Tell me about your most recent please or upcoming single/album…

Nothing planned yet but watch this space!!

What’s the best venue you’ve played so far and what’s would be your dream venue to play after Covid-19?

Loved playing both ‘Night & Day’ (Manchester) & The Cavern (Liverpool) as they mean a lot to me personally. I’d love to play the Manchester Apollo as that’s my fave venue!! But after that I’m hoping for a festival gig, in a field full of lovely people going mental!!

Favourite festival you’ve played or want to play and why?

The Modwear Festival in Palermo! Gorgeous setting, great music and beautiful people!!

What tune should readers listen to right now of yours that sums you up the best?

‘Mr Twist’ Funky acoustic guitar, biting lyrics and snarly vocals! It can found on my Soundcloud profile.

What can we look forward to from you in 2021?

Hopefully tons of gigs at pubs, clubs, live venues and festivals! I’ll defo be getting in the studio to record all these new tunes and then getting out there meeting new people and seeing all you music lovers again. I miss you all!!
