We caught up with 4 piece rock ‘n’ roll band Shambolics frontman Darren Forbes, ahead of their Reading festival slot on the Jack Rocks/This Feeling stage. Taking influence from all sorts of genres, the band are a mixture of 1960’s phsycedelia,1970’s harmonies, 1980’s clean guitar chimes and 1990’s melodic anthems.
Tell us about yourself…
We are Shambolics, a 4 piece ‘Dreamy Rock & Roll’ band from Fife in Scotland
Who are your major influences and inspirations, and why?
The Beatles, Stone Roses, Oasis, The Smiths, The La’s, Fleetwood Mac
Sum up the band in five words…
The Future Of Rock & Roll.
Who writes your songs?
Myself and Lewis have written some but we all have a fair bit of input in the songwriting.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
Just life in general, life growing up in a working class place like Fife, we write about reality. Something that is rare nowadays.
Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?
Near enough, every single band playing gigs with This Feeling. There’s so many good unsigned bands out there right now.
What’s in your CD player right now, or last song you streamed?
The La’s full album, the only one they ever made or released. Its a tragedy how they never went on to make more music.
What are you like live?
Very energetic compared to our recordings, especially in Scotland – the crowd makes our gigs something special I can’t even begin to describe… just check the live videos on YouTube.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
We have a full UK tour coming up in September to promote the release of our next single ‘Chasing a Disaster’ out 05/09/17
You’re stranded on a desert island and have one album with you, what is it?
The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
What’s on the horizon, and what can we look forward to from you?
New music out 05/09/17 then a tour in September which starts this Saturday at Reading Festival then all the same again. We’re a step ahead right now – already have our next single after this release recorded and near enough ready for release end of the year and we’re planning our next tour too before we’ve even started this one in September! Haha
WEAPON OF CHOICE – Voice, I love when a band can nail harmonies, not an easy thing to do
BASE – Kirkcaldy in Fife
FOOTBALL – Rangers Football Club
GUILTY PLEASURE – Starship – Nothing’s Gonna Stop us Now
HERO – Pretty much all the band influences… Conor McGregor is definitely my biggest hero outside music, an absolute legend and inspiration.
VILLAIN – Everyone who has involvement with the X Factor or any other nonsense ‘talent’ karaoke shows, can’t even remember the names of the other ones, really not into them though…
BEST COMEDY SHOW – X Factor is an absolute comedy.
THREADS – Not just saying this because I’m an Oasis fan but I absolutely love LG’s brand Pretty Green. I’m on their website right now looking at the new Beatles influenced range they’ve just brought out, not any other clothing brands in the world like that right now.
TROTTERS – I like desert boots, wear them alot nowadays but can’t go wrong with a fresh pair of Adidas Originals.
AT THE BAR – Buckfast, but not alot of bars do that so a pint of Tennants or double vodka and coke will do fine.
GIG YOU WISHED YOU’D BEEN AT – The Beatles at Shea Stadium or Oasis at Maine Road ’96.
NIGHT OUT WITH ANYONE – Think Conor McGregor would be class to have a night out with if he was on the sesh.
FILM – Scarface.
SOUNDTRACK – You’ve got a friend in me – Toy Story… what a tune!
TOP 3 TUNES OF ALL TIME – It’s impossible to try narrow this down but off the top of my head … Oasis – Live Forever; The Beatles – Let it Be; Fleetwood mac – Dreams
OPINION ON THE CURRENT MUSIC INDUSTRY – Absolute fabricated, plastic nonsense and I can’t wait til it is wiped out, think people need to start being optimistic instead of just being like ‘Music is done now, the music industry is fucked’. The music industry is a fucked up place right now but real music will always stand the test of time, it’s only a matter of time till guitar music and people who write their own material make their way back up to the top.
THREE WORDS – The fuckin’ future.
