Rei Gyaamie is made up of Reiner Tarry and Phil Jerromes, a singer/songwriter and producer duo currently at Hull University. They take influence from a long list of artists including the likes of Dua Lipa, Mabel, Sinead Harnett, ALMA and Elli Ingram. Their tracks explore the use of extensive layering and modern vocal production. The music features a blend between electronic and acoustic sounds bringing together elements of Pop, Dance and R’n’B. Live, they employ the talents of some of the finest musicians in Hull as well using live sample triggering and effects.
Tell me a bit about your band & why should we check you out?
So we’re a singer/songwriter and producer duo. Rei writes the lyrics, melodies, chords and I (Phil) concentrate on the production. We are always bouncing ideas of each other and creating the tracks together. We’ve been working together for a while now and we released our first track in February! It was just in time for our supporting slot on Fickle Friends album release tour when they came to Hull. When we play live we have a few extra guys with us to fill out the sound and we enjoy interjecting some fun gimmicks into the set. We would definitely recommend ourselves to fans of pop music – particularly this new blend of electronic and acoustic production.
Who are your major influences and why?
So many. Vocalists such as Mabel, Grace Carter, Sinead Harnett and Arlissa, they have so much soul, feeling and a connectivity to an audience. Production wise, we like Jonas Blue, Call Me Loop and B3AR, there’s so much intricacy involved in their tracks. We hope we can soak up some of their originality and manifest this in our own work.
If you had to sum the band up in 5 words what would they be?
Wild, Fierce, Social, Humble & Rhythmical.
Where do you get your inspiration from to write songs, what gets those creative juices flowing?
Rei: Boys who break my heart provide me with plenty of choice words and an idea for the feel of the track. We also love creating playlists together full of musicians we are inspired by and discuss how we can emulate their creativity in our own work. Studio takeaway is also a vibe and something we highly recommend when the juices are depleting.
Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?
Polo! We got to support them on their UK tour this April – they were really nice guys. Kat’s voice is just incredible.
What’s the last song you played?
Losing Out – Ebony Frainteso
If you could perform with anyone – who would you like to share a stage with?
A Pop/R’n’B supergroup. We’re feeling Dua Lipa, Mabel and Jorja Smith on the BV’s, Charlie Puth on Keys, and us filling the Lead Vox and Drums positions. Feel like that would be a solid sound!
Describe to me your live performance?
Rei: Emotional. The tracks are a journey for me and I enjoy sharing that with an audience. There are highs and lows and I think people relate to that.
Phil: Thorough. We work hard in the rehearsal room to try achieve an authenticity to the original tracks, as well as blending some live elements to tease the audience! We use some live electronics too which we feel add another layer to the performance!
On that note do you have any upcoming shows?
Yes! We will be down at Polar Bear in Hull on the 22nd May supporting Counting Coins alongside The Hot Soles. Looking forward to that. After that we’ve got a live session down at the BBC Humberside studios for their Introducing show at the end of July. We will hopefully be appearing at a few local festivals this summer too!
You’re stranded on a desert island, you get one beer and one album to get through, what are they?
Phil: Guiness and Ready to Die – Notorious B.I.G.
Rei: Dua Lipa’s Self Titled Album and a pint of Carling ‘cause I’m a cheap date..’
Whats on the horizon, what can we look forward to from you?
We’re currently working on new tracks with the aim to release one this summer. Its been a whirlwind since we’ve got going, so hopefully we can settle into a rhythm, get out there and show more people our music – so keep tuned!
