Grace caught up with Greater Manchester 4-piece, Mercy Kelly, who formed during the winter of 2019; channeling a stirring mix of chorus wave guitar sounds and stadium sized melodies. Originally starting out as an acoustic songwriting partnership between frontman Jack Marland and lead guitarist Adam Bridge, the group gradually morphed into its current incarnation with new members Michael Shenton and Joel Buckley joining on drums and bass respectively. The band released their debut single Anymore in March 2021 to solid reviews, receiving notable praise from The Chameleons frontman Mark Burgess. Once again drawing upon the formula of chorus wave soundscapes and driving undercurrents, their latest single ‘The Fall’ further sets out the Mercy Kelly stall – conveying the confusion and contradictions of romanticism through a lens of old school New Wave sensibilities. Be sure to check it out below…

Tell me a bit about your band & why should we check you out?
We’re a 4 piece from Greater Manchester bringing a brand of chiming chorus wave songs to the table. We are massively Inspired by New Wave bands of the 80s such as The Cure, The Smiths and even Tears For Fears. With an anthemic and charming sound we are definitely a band to watch live.

Who are your major influences and why?
As stated before bands such as The Cure, The Smiths (being from Manchester). Also bands such as U2, The Cult and The Chameleons.
If you had to sum the band up in 5 words what would they be?
Charming, devoted, diverting, loud and somewhat certifiable.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs (where do you get your inspiration from)?
Mainly Me (Jack) and Adam write the lyrics and the majority of the songs. With the help of Micheal and Joel to fill out the important gaps. As far as topics go we tend to write about current life topics such as love and hate. I personally use a lot of Shakespeare’esk lyrics in the songs. Adam mostly brings the structure of the song and I focus on melody.

Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?
Not really listened to much underground stuff lately but if I’d have to choose it would be a band called The Outcharms I like there whole demeanor and sound.
Whats in your car CD player right now or last song played on Spotify?
Well, my CD player is broke so Ive been stuck to one CD for an eternity and that’s like an old MTV live sessions, one that has bands like The Cramberries and Sting on it. So yeah brilliant, but got bored fast as you can imagine. My AUX cable has also snapped; so no Spotify unless I’m at home which it will then be ‘Mercy Kellys Chorus Wave Spotify Playlist’.  As far as the car is concerned, Radio X is the radio station for me.
Describe to me your live performance?
That’s all a secret for whoever watches us. The plan is to switch things up each time. Keep it fresh. But main thing is to be anthemic and loud; this will be Mercy Kelly’s signature live sound.
On that note do you have any upcoming shows?
Yes, our next one is The Castle Manchester on 9th July. Keep an eye out on our socials for more.
You’re stranded on a desert island and have album to get through, what is it?
Thin Lizzy Renagade. My favourite album of all time. Can’t get bored of it.
Whats on the horizon, what can we look forward to from you?
Getting out and about playing, releasing more tunes and showing the world who we are and that we mean buisness.
