We caught up with Ables Army from Huddersfield, a band I personally think you need to check out immediately on the Spotify (link below) – bang it on and bathe yourselves in the vocal tones of Mike Foy (guitar & vocals), James Livesey (bass & vocals) and George Corless (drums). The band have worked very hard, playing anywhere and everywhere across the North of England. In 2017 they won the Bingley Festival Live Emerging 2017 competition earning them a slot at the festival alongside Manic Street Preachers, Peter Doherty and British Sea Power.

We got to know a little about the band and what makes them tick…

Tell me a bit about your band & why people should check you out?

We’re a double-fronted indie rock and roll band from Huddersfield, combining the swagger of 90’s Britpop, the precision & intricacy of 00’s indie and an overwhelming feeling of ‘we’re all fucked anyway so let’s just enjoy ourselves!’

Who are your major influences and why?

When we first met, James and I bonded over David Bowie and The Smiths, but whether or not that comes across in any of our stuff is debatable! Aside from that we’re all big fans of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and Oasis. All the indie stalwarts really.

If you had to sum the band up in 5 words what would they be?

Mike, James & George Playing Music

Where do you get your inspiration from to write songs, what gets those creative juices flowing?

Most of our stuff comes from specific personal experience; whenever something noteworthy happens to one of us we’ll try and get at least a song or two out of it. It’s never anything too out-there though; break-ups, growing pains, the crushing guilt, shame, and compulsion to rethink your entire life that comes free with any bad hangover. Y’know just normal stuff.

Who is your favourite unsigned/underground band at the moment and why?

There’s an absolute wealth of unsigned talent so it’d be pretty difficult to single one band out. Our favourites though would have to be;

Palmes – These are putting out some amazing stuff. Check out last single ‘Soak’ or their EP ‘18a’

The Maitlands – Manchester post-punk revivalists fronted by Carl Ingram, the best frontman in town. Whatever town he’s in. You have to see them live.

No Hot Ashes – Just ace.

“Man, I really like that little souvenir song lad.” – Adam Smith, Temples

What’s the last song you played?

Arctic Monkeys – Four Out of Five. It’s a tune. Don’t believe the hate. I’m gonna have another listen right now.

If you could perform with anyone – who would you like to share a stage with?

I had a dream once that we were Leonard Cohen’s backing band, that would’ve been cool.

“Ables Army – Brilliant, full of youthful exuberance” Alan Raw, BBC Introducing

Describe to me your live performance?

High energy, fast-paced indie rock and roll with lots of sweat, bad jokes, and even worse dancing.

On that note do you have any upcoming shows?

We’re currently planning a Northern tour for September/October, taking in all our favourite spots along the M62 plus a few places we’ve not been to before. We’ll be releasing all the details of it soon. Watch this space!

“Ables Army are a stomping roar of indie rock” – The Devil’s Tuna Blog

You’re stranded on a desert island, you get one beer and one album to get through, what are they?

Moretti and Marquee Moon

What’s on the horizon, what can we look forward to from you?

We’ll be putting out our a next single ‘Private Eye’ very soon. It’s quite different to anything else we’ve put out so far; much slower and laid back. Hopefully people like it! After that we’ll be releasing an ep at the end of the summer before heading out on tour through the autumn.
